QUESTION:
Why are household appliances connected in parallel?
ANSWER:
In the circuit parallel combinations, the potential drop is constant (In series combinations current constant). Different amounts of current are allowed through each component of the circuit separately. i.e, we may switch off unwanted connections without disturbing others. But if you connect in series we cannot switch off unwanted connections, if we switch, the total current will be zero and all home appliances will be switched off. Hence the parallel connection of appliances is preferred in household connections.
